ROME: Australian Daria Gavrilova has progressed to the quarter-finals of the Italian Open with a three-set win over No.7 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova. Gavrilova, who came through the qualifiers in Rome after forgetting to enter the tournament on time, won 2-6 7-5 6-4. It was her first win over a top-10 player in 2017. The 23-year-old played a poor first set but forced Kuznetsova into mistakes in the second before storming home in the third. Gavrilova broke her Russian opponent for the victory. She hit some outrageous shots to beat her more experienced opponent, including a backhand lob winner that only just made it in.
