‘Cotton policy proved fruitful to increase yield’

LAHORE: The cotton policy of the government has proved fruitful and resulted in a substantial increase in its production in the country. A spokesman of Kissan Welfare Forum Punjab said this in a statement here yesterday. He said that with an unprecedented increase of 17.7% the cotton production till November 1, this year was estimated at 8.134 million bales. Previous year till the same date total output was counted at 6.948 million bales in the country, he added. He elaborated that Punjab has witnessed 19 % increase while Sindh 15%. Quoting data released by the ginners, he said that ginning factories had received 1.186 million additional bales in the country till November 1, this year. He said that 1,017 ginning factories were operational in the country, out of them 723 factories were operational in Punjab province only. He said that textile sector has so far purchased 6.984 million cotton bales while the exporters purchased 0.198 million bales. He said that a stock of 1.951 million cotton bales was yet in the process of being sold out. “Demand and price of Pakistani cotton has got a substantial increase this season because of being contamination free and germs free”, he said. He said the government deserve credit for its efforts to ensure good quality production by guiding the farmers on every step. –APP
